A woman out of time with her images and perspectives, Dinesen captures the essence of Africa, comprehends over time the meaning in the smallest thing she encounters and expands it so we can understand her descriptive view. Stunning in its realism and reflecting the society of the times in colonial Africa, she brings light to the dark continent and beyond.

Both books are good, but Shadows on the Grass is the better of the two. Much, much better than the movie.

So much more than the movie. Wonderful to explore a turn of the (19th) century colonist view of Kenya. So much poetry in her description of the people, the wildlife, and the landscape. Baroness Blixen is a first-rate story teller; I need to read more of her books.

This is the first Dinesen book I've read but if her style is similar with all books I'll read more. Her imagry is amazing and the characters are hard not to connect with.
