I first saw the series on t.v. with Derek Jacobi in the title role, and was intrigued enough to read the book. Very well written!

Very enjoyable, but it reminded me of Graves's "I, Claudius" and "Claudius the God" books-- both are more accurately historical fiction than "Rome", and still miles better than any TV drama. If you like "Rome", check out the Claudius books (the third in Graves's trilogy, "King Jesus", wasn't nearly as good). Never mind Western Civ 101-- after you read them, you'll remember the order of the Roman emperors, because Graves makes them such unforgettable characters.   hide

A really good read even though I did get lost eventually as to who was related to who. Murder (lots) and incest(lots), framed against the backdrop of a crumbling monarchy. Primarily a work of faction, it really did impress to me how mild mannered we are today in comparison to our BC cousins (or is that brothers?). Claudius is the perfect anti-hero whose self preservation relies solely on people...more
