I'm a total Hobsbawm groupie, so perhaps I'm a little biased... but I have to say that this is undoubtably the best history of the short 20th century ever written. Perhaps Hobsbawm's own Marxist leanings were the reason he was able to give such insight into the mindset of both Stalin and Kruschev during the cold war.

although The book does not keep the events in sequence, but recognizes and portrays the exact situation in each line of the text in terms of country's position, mentality of the politicians, the steps they could have taken and how had it progressed then.Excellent book if someone likes the explanation with coverage from works of other authors with right amount of criticism, Although one may feel...more

so far good overview including political and economic ties with wars in Europe leading to polarization of world after WWII....this is a good intro read to a better one, an article called "The Geopolitics of Capitalism" by Harvey which is most recommended
