I loved this little book. Each story was simply written, but the subject was heartbreaking. Loved it.

The style of this novel makes it easy to read, and yet the contents still pack an emotional punch. Plus the way that is written in segments that can essentially stand alone really supports the way that life sometimes feels like little scenes, little events other than long drawn out chapters. And that girl that said this book has "too many uncomfortable topics" is a moron. Life has...more

I read it for the poetic language, tone of childhood, and the idea of story-telling.

I've read and reread this so many times. This is a good example of quality not quantity.

I first read this book when I was 11, 12 and I loved it recently reread it as a 21-year-old and I loved it and I think that "spanning the ages" is a good quality for a book to have. Deceptively simplistic, but what "nobody's wife and nobody's mother" Cisneros can say about a person in sub-200 words, other authors take chapters to do.

I just saw this book on the display table at Barnes & Noble yesterday. I pick it up, read the first 2 pages and I was hooked. The word "Mango" has now come up two other times in 24 hours regarding totally different subjects (but not the fruit).

What a fucking piece of shit book. I don't know why every 7th grade english teacher feels the need to force feed it down their students' throats till they die of boredom and never have the will to read again. This book should be burned because of how numbing and slow paced it is, not the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because Mark Twains kinda racist. Fuck this book.

This was another short book that I chose in the hopes that I will complete the summer reading club at the library this year. It is a very nice little book & I think that the almost poetic quality of the writing works well set in the very short nearly self-contained chapters.

A decent book on a young Latina living in Chicago. Really, the book is more of a series of short stories centered around this main story-line feature. At times the stories are poetic, but I found most of the stories to be so-so. It was never really boring, but neither was it very exciting and this is the second time I have read this book. Overall, a decent book, but not one I would get...more
