Great book for anyone interested in the Civil Rights Era or journalism. It's horrifying to read about such violent, vehement opposition to integration. And it's just as fascinating to see how journalists hindered and/or helped the movement. Dense book, but well worth the effort.

This is the back story of the civil rights movement. We all know much of this history..this is the story of the people that risked their lives to tell it and therefore bring it to the forefront.

4.5 stars actually. An exhaustively researched, but highly readable summation of the press' handling of the civil rights movement. Plenty of high points - but the authors don't skimp the shameful stuff. Should be required reading for anyone interested in either the journalism profession and/or the civil rights movement.
