Ubik

Ubik has tighter plotting than others PKD novels, and reads like a mystery as much as a PKD mind trip. I admit I struggled to submerge myself into this world, but once I did, boy, what a ride! You don't know who is alive and who is dead and who is stabbing whose back. A crucial read for fans of Dick.

Dick is the master of this type of altered reality story. At first you think the book is typical science fiction garbage with talks of psychics, talking doors, and going to the moon, but then the book takes a quick turn into an almost subconscious world where nothing is what it seems. Great book, and one of my favorite endings ever :)

I thought this was a great story that was way ahead of its time. PKD revisits the concept of precogs with an added element of the ability for people to be frozen and contacted after they're dead through the use of advanced technology. I thought this was a great story that was way ahead of its time. PKD revisits the concept of precogs with an added element of the ability for people to be frozen and contacted after they're dead through the use of advanced technology. The story really messes with your perceptions of reality as things around the characters of the story begin to revert back in time as money changes, futuristic cars become cars from the 30's, and other strange occurrences. The concepts of the book are profound. However, I felt that the characters themselves were not very interesting. However, I felt that the journey that they went on and the concepts presented more than made up for the lack of character development.   hide

In a great page-turner, PKD manages to encourage the reader to question reality and world around them. Despite the fairly obvious plot and twists, PKD's unique humour and writing style keep this book afloat. While reading the book, I couldn't help but think how well it would suit itself to a play; which turned out to be no surprise when I found out that a screenplay had been written based on the novel. This means you can look forward to a fast-paced plot and the occasional action segment, enjoyable by virtually anyone.   hide
