wonderfull story

Steeped in the history of a land of desolate beauty. The fens are near and dear to me, and this book weaves past and present, at times gentle and nostalgic and at times with horrifying intensity. My favorite book.

Having just moved to the Fens I wanted to read something based in the area. Great one to start with (although very few others anyway). Had loads of local history. Would have been good to read it maybe 15 years ago when postmodern narrators were not so irritating and dated.

One of the best modern literature written of late

OK, OK, so I first read this for my A level in English lit. (That's a little sad, but it is one of my favourites on the importance of history)

A dense book. Much better than the movie.

I loved it!!

A fascinating book that reminded me a bit of the epic family histories used by authors such as Garcia-Marquez or Rushdie. Swift's writing is dark yet beautiful. The Fens are such an interesting back drop for this story, taking on, as narrator Tom Crick puts it, an almost "fairy tale" aspect. The book's meditations on history are also amazing, if troubling. I'd definitely recommend this book.
