I loved reading this book, as it gives a wonderful introduction to Man as an Artist, Engineer, and Thinker. It begins with pre-history and moves into the 20th century. It is important for anyone to read this compilation of how we as a race have evolved. Also recommend Boorstin's The Discoverers.
