falls off a bit at the end. I am not saying that the book was not well written, but sometimes a book's content is just so damn good as raw material, that it leaves the author trying to keep pace with it. A little kid running behind an ice cream drunk.
This is worth the read though, get as far as you can with it. I got 3/4 through, then something else happened. I'm glad I read it...more
Not only does the author risk his life to run with a rough crowd for this piece but he also delves into the psychology of it all. I was shocked by some of the events described in the book and the emotion and sense of kinship that fosters the mob mentality. It's a little long, but worth the read.
This is an impressive piece of accessible sociology. It concerns English soccer hooligans and the mayhem that follows them. This book is especially memorable to me because I was reading it while walking down Davie Street in Vancouver to return to a friend's place when I was punched in the face by a big, fat, sunburned skid. Fortunately, I didn't bleed on the paperback.
