This is the best journalism I have ever read. Bill Buford infiltrates the notorious Manchest United soccer club.

This is a book on group psychology performed on the stage of soccer hooligans. Great read, fascinating insight.

A Clockwork Orange come to life. A must read for any one interested in the history of football (soccer) hooliganism and/or crowd theory

Starts slow but becomes more interesting (and coherent) as a study in violence and crowd psychology as it goes. Worth reading

falls off a bit at the end. I am not saying that the book was not well written, but sometimes a book's content is just so damn good as raw material, that it leaves the author trying to keep pace with it. A little kid running behind an ice cream drunk. This is worth the read though, get as far as you can with it. I got 3/4 through, then something else happened. I'm glad I read it...more

Not only does the author risk his life to run with a rough crowd for this piece but he also delves into the psychology of it all. I was shocked by some of the events described in the book and the emotion and sense of kinship that fosters the mob mentality. It's a little long, but worth the read.

An amazing, if somewhat dated, book. Always wondered what my life would have been like if my parents had stayed in the UK. Not like this I hope.

A great book. Not just a look at crowd violence but also the mentality of large groups of people and how easily any of us could be led to do horrible things. May have led to my fear of large crowds and my dislike of the Mall of America.

This is an impressive piece of accessible sociology. It concerns English soccer hooligans and the mayhem that follows them. This book is especially memorable to me because I was reading it while walking down Davie Street in Vancouver to return to a friend's place when I was punched in the face by a big, fat, sunburned skid. Fortunately, I didn't bleed on the paperback. A sentimental favourite: I...more
