Sanctuary

I've read something like 5 chapters and am competely lost!!!! I think I will give it up. Way to challenging for me (although I studied "as I lay dying" at Uni and liked it). Too bad.

I really had no emotional connection with the story, but it's an interesting comparison between the urban and rural south and how they're more alike than you would think.

This book was disturbing

Finally got around to this. Don't know how I waited so long. Enjkoyed it very much. Expect to read lots more Faulkner.

This book is completely underrated due to Faulkner's criticism of it (which incidentally his family and friends claim were complete lies) that is was a 'pulp novel written purely for profit'. This is not at all typical Faulkner--hardly any long/difficult passages to work through. Unfortunately, it's also without the rewards that those long passages usually bestow upon the reader as well. The ending is amazingly intense (and oh so gruesomely Faulkneresque), but if you're looking for a great work of literature, move on to some of Faulkner's masterpieces.

Not his best novel. This was written for a popular audience and it suffers for that reason. But nevertheless there are some passages of prose which are among the best Faulkner ever wrote, just not enough of them to constitute a book.
