Short Cuts (Vintage Contemporaries)

The verson I read had a foreword by Robert Altman, full of terrible nonsense. Great Short stories though. "The Collectors" is brill, and the poem at the end...

SHORT CUTS is probably Carver's most well know collection of stories. Some of these stories are in other collections. Read this first and then see the Altman movie.

Carver is way too cynical for my tastes. While these stories are well crafted - and he deserves ample credit for this, as few are up to the challenge of creating short fiction - they invariably left me filling depressed and misanthropic. I will be taking this one to the used book store. The film left me disgusted, too, even though I respect Altman a great deal. The only thing I can say that is positive: I recently encountered a short poem by Carver that I thought was both beautiful and spiritual. Go figure!   hide
