Postman, a former elementary school teacher himself, makes an elegant argument that schools need to define their purpose (the 'end' in the title)in educating children, that education needs a motivating "narrative". The title can mean the "purpose of education" or the "demise of education" both of which are discussed at length. Postman is an entertaining and poignant writer. I'm a great fan of his insights and style.
