Murakami straddles the mundane and the otherworldy with his usual grace. Very suspenseful and intriguing. Recommend that A Wild Sheep Chase is read first, as this book has the same narrator and follows that story, however both books can be read on their own as self-contained novels. I could not put this book down... Why? It's difficult to express in writting (just like the protagonist of the book can't explain to others many of the mysterious things that happen around him). I could not put this book down... Why? It's difficult to express in writting (just like the protagonist of the book can't explain to others many of the mysterious things that happen around him). I enjoyed it on different levels - on one hand it's a captivating detective story, but also full of witty, philosophical, yet simple (in a delightful way) dialogues, observations, thoughts... Sometimes scary, sometimes funny, many times thought-provocking and, at the same time, positive. I literally could not put this book down... Why? Difficult to explain with words (just like the hero of the book would say about some of the things he experiences). I enjoyed it on many levels - on the surface, it's a captivating detective story, filled with simple (or maybe just seemingly simple?), but philosophical dialogues... A portrait of the "modern" (it was written in the 80s) world with all it's flaws. Sometimes scary, sometimes funny, but somehow still positive and full of hope.   hide

As usual, Murakami abstractly illustrates several key themes. The ones I liked best were about human connection, loss and abandonment, and alienation. Out of those, the way Murakami depicts the ultimate discovery of human connection - transcending over all physical and mental constraints - is refreshing and thought provoking. Highly recommended!

It's got great, original amd compelling characters, a driving plot and uses its many pop culture references well and unobtrusively.Side note: Did you notice that the famous author's (Yuki's father) name is an anagram of 'Haruki Murakami'. Its weird...more

Too many unprocessed issues left behind. I was a bit upset how it ends. Would it be clarifing if i read his other novels (wild sheep chase and others)?? I seek for cliff notes and I probably search online. I think i am moving on to wind up bird chroInicle as many say it is better.
