I 'dunno--I love Didion's non-fiction. Just about nobody does an essay with more clarity and economy...but I had a terrible time connecting with this.

By far and large my all time favorite piece of fiction. While the storyline isn't all that unique or exciting Didion's prose style is what the real highlight is. Just as a warning though - I don't know of a single other person besides myself who even liked this book let alone loved it

Wow. Didion never ceases to amaze. This is my favourite of her novels, so far. Luminiously written, incredibly inventive, intriguing, and surely the partial-basis for Philip Roth's American Pastoral?

I'm becoming a big fan of Didion after reading this a few months ago. Set in 1975 near the end of the Vietnam War, she combines the harshness of the political situation with a longtime romance.
