Somewhat dry but interesting. I think I'm going to read it again, though.

An impressively detailed work of one of the most fascinating "hidden" stories of the Second World War in Europe. Though the book can be a bit tedious to read at times, Nicholas impressively weaves together a compelling tale of humanity's lust for art and the brave efforts of a few to save it in the middle of the madness that is war.

Fascinating study of the determination of Hitler and his gang to dominate the artistic world. Also examines the collaborators and the people who oppossed Hitler and the collaborators and who strove to protect Europe's artistic patriomony. The author's wit makes this book an entertaining read.

I wish I liked this book more, but it was so much information to get through that I put it down midway and just couldn't get back to it. Maybe I'll try again some other time. I want to like this book, but I'm getting mired in names of players (both artistic and otherwise) I don't recognize. So this goes back on my "to read" list while I make some progress elsewhere.

A thorough, insightful look at the theories and practices of Nazi looting and the American Monument men who protected the treasures after liberation. While the topic is incredibly interesting, it will probably be a depressing read for an art lover with the numerous tales of paintings destroyed by the Nazis or lost after the war. It can also be very dense in place, but is overall a good read.

A history of the Third Reich’s war on art and how the Allies and others tried to stop the Nazis from plundering artistic treasures wherever they went. The Nazis’ need to rationalize their brutality was almost comical; as less than human, Jews could not be considered citizens of occupied countries, so their artistic treasures needed to be confiscated and “protected” by the Reich.
