Very entertaining. It was more of a social analysis of the modern south then an examination of die hard civil war reenactors. It's very sad to see how divided the south is in their resentment to the north. If they're that unhappy being part of the Union, I would have no problem with them seceding. I wouldn't shed one drop of blood to keep them in the US. The part about the reenactors was very...more

Am learning new vocabulary words. He throws big words around more shamelessly than even I do.

I felt that Horwitz was way off base most of the time. Good story but awful insight.

Books by journalists are only good for one thing: offering a slice of contemporary cultures or experiences alien to the reader. Thankfully, this delightful triptych of the 1990s South enlightens its audience with minimal axe-grinding. I found this book, if not terribly informative, certainly entertaining!

An interesting look at how the Confederacy still lives for many in the South, albeit with a small and aberrant group. This isn't a salacious view of freaks, but a sympathetic tale of a journalist journeying through the world of hard-core Civil War reenactors and the Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy, for whom preserving a way of life is still important.

Not just a good book, for white Southerners it's an important book. Maybe too for northerners who seem somehow still puzzled by our continued obsession with the War.
