Faulkner's style is very quiet, unassuming, and matter-of-fact. He just tells the stories and leaves you to think about why the characters behaved the way they did, what they were thinking, what their motivations were and so on. If you can't handle him in novel-length chunks, it can be nice to read just a story or two and put the book down. I recommend "A Rose for Miss Emily" and "Hair"...
