A great read from a historian who knows how to get the most from source materials and knows how to weave it into a tale that grips the reader.

The raucous founding of the baseball mecca and its context within the new early Republic. Taylor does a fine job of connecting Cooper's story to the larger historical framework and to America's memory of him in his son's books.

Good history writing is the best writing there is. Alan Taylor brings it in this one. American's should know more about the Jacksonian era, this is a good place to start.
