Describes growing up poor. Through hard work and luck, some make it out while others remain poor, either making the best of it or leading very difficult lives. The mother in this story is one of the strongest people you will ever read about. I also admired the silent strength of the brother who remains in the small town where the family was raised.

A bit of a slow read for me because, as Bragg's friend said to him: he "... crowded too many pretty lines into my stories..." Nevertheless, Rick Bragg has a brilliant sense of humour which I loved! And his analogies are superbly intelligent!

I also listed to the audio book - which is read by the author. So amazing to hear the story literally in his own words.

What a great story about the Old South. A different perspective from the cotton fields of North East Alabama.

I feel this stands alone as a moving memorial of a mother and the love of her son. Rick Bragg's autobiographical account of his childhood among America's poorest in Alabama and his formidable and unforgettable mother. It's contemporary Faulkner with pathos, pride, and poverty. Bragg has an authentic American voice. It should not be missed.
