intersting i wish they would have kept the chapter by his roomate all in french for the movie. a little different then the film this is a more fulfilling work as usual when someone tries to make a movie from the book.after reading this and pretty much anything by bret easton-ellis i am always left in a daze sort of like the one his characters always seem to be in or traveling through. His books...more

I had high expectations from this book because I loved American Psycho. I found it somewhat tedious to read and did not like the ending. But I got through it...

His humour is very dark...actually pitch black LOL. Very funny though. P.S. his whole point is there are no rules to attraction...it's pretty random (which is true).

Fact: the reason that I like Ellis is because he is obsessed with being nineteen. Now, granted, this book is about a rather not-me college students who do lots of drugs and get laid on a regular basis, but at the heart of this book, Ellis writes in a voice that suggests he, too, knows exactly how it feels to think you're going to spend the rest of your life dry-humping a pillow.

This may very well be Ellis' mangnum opus. His great work. Glamorama is close, more mature, more stylistic (or eschews grammatical rules such as quotation marks altogether). From its multiple P.O.V., to the requisite chapter in french (Je m'empeche) to the tribute to Less Than Zero (people on campus are afraid to merge) is feels real. I can't help myself. It made me want to get an American...more

Gotta be honest, I`m liking the book way more than the movie. The book didn`t really make sense at first, than it kinda picks up. But there are way to many things happeneing at the same time, and the movie isn`t even close to being true to the book, names adn random quotes that's it.

Dismissed on release, The Rules of Attraction nearly sent BEE's career on a nosedive before the transcendent American Psycho. There isn't much to it, really, and the themes were explored better in Less Than Zero. It has a sentimental place in my heart, despite being, along with Lunar Park, his weakest work. It did, after all, give us Sean Bateman - one of the most conceited, deluded,...more

I was led to this novel because of Roger Avary's film adaptation, which is quite good. The book is probably better. I love the way the first person narration moves from character to character in each chapter. There's even a creepy and brief cameo chapter narrated by Patrick Bateman (from "American Psycho"), whose younger brother features promintently in "Rules." I think...more

This book hurts my head. But.. Ok so brett easton ellis has a bit of a tendency to go on a little tangent here and there. He's an excellent writer, don't get me wrong. He pulls you right in, and he keeps you interested (for the most part) which is what a good writer is supposed to do. By the end of the book, you feel like its deceived you a little, because nothing is right, nothing...more

This book melted my brain when I was 17 and first encountering psychedelics. It is forever linked in my mind with three Rolling Stones songs, Paint It Black, Gimme Shelter and Jumpin' Jack Flash. Hollow and frightening and dazzling in its use of multiple narrators, it's truly a first-rate example of the depth and affect that can be achieved with an epistolary format.
