The second book of His Dark Materials begins with Will Parry, a boy of 12 in our own world, who must flee from men who are searching for him. He finds himself in a crossroads between the worlds- a city called Citagazze. There he encounters Lyra, the heroine of the Golden Compass. Together they begin a search for Will’s father, who was lost many years ago exploring the different worlds....more

This one was...boring at times, obviosult a bridge novel that connected the first two, but I liked it. The addition of Will was nice, as he was from our own world. In this one, the religious connections are forged and the story startes to paint its picture and delve deeper into a non-children's storyy atmosphere. So, SO boring. The religious content of these books has nothing do do with waht the...more

From the promising begining of The Golden Compass, this series takes a trip into the weird. I was uncomfortable with the untrustworthiness of nearly all the adult characters. But then, I am an adult.

This sequel has much more depth than the previous book, starting to hint at the final battle to come. It is confusing as yet to determine which side is the actual side of good, that of the Church or that of the rebel angels. Lyra and Will naturally develop the most as the main characters but now the story branches off and brings other characters to the fore and shows the challenges to their own...more

I think I may have enjoyed The Subtle Knife more than The Golden Compass, although I didn’t think that I would at the beginning. I missed Lyra and Pan, but I got used to Will and his story fairly quickly. It seemed to be more tightly written to me, with less time spent on getting the story going, which is the luxury of a sequel I suppose. I enjoyed seeing Lyra start to mature though the...more

A great fantasy, but is no match for the likes of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia. Pullman is a mastermind at using a story to communicate his ideas. He warns against the perils of extremist religion, yet in doing so, is an extremist himself. He totally ignores the good, mercy, love and hope that decent and honest faith brings, and hones in on the injustices...more

I enjoyed this book, although not as much as the Golden Compass. There are multiple plot twists (some of which are easily predicted) and new characters, both good and bad. This book tends to focus more on Will then Lyra, but I thought that was for the better. Can't wait to finish the series.
