David Herbert Donald's Lincoln is a stunningly original portrait of Lincoln's life and presidency. Donald brilliantly depicts Lincoln's gradual ascent from humble beginnings in rural Kentucky to the ever- expanding political circles in Illinois, and finally to the presidency of a country divided by civil war. Donald goes beyond biography, illuminating the gradual development of Lincoln's character, chronicling his tremendous capacity for evolution and growth, thus illustrating what made it possible for a man so inexperienced and so unprepared for the presidency to become a great moral leader. In the most troubled of times, here was a man who led the country out of slavery and preserved a shattered Union -- in short, one of the greatest presidents this country has ever seen. less
I guess I've read so much about Lincoln that I wasn't able to get anything new from this book. It lacked some of the detailed stories that I have enjoyed reading in other biographies. I had hoped to gain new insight about my favorite president, but this book seemed to cover just the basics.
If you want to learn what humble beginnings one of our greatest Presidents came from. This is the book. Not only do you learn about the man Lincoln but you learn why Illinois today is the Land of Lincoln he loved it traveled it defended it and grew along with our young country
Great read. Absolute page turner. Highly recommended for anyone who has even the slightest interest in history and one of the most amazing character's of all time. Exhaustingly researched, Donald makes Lincoln jump from the page and make us feel as though we're actually there witnessing the great man himself.
