Very well written story about racism and the sputtering rise of unions after WWI (and the often ugly attempts to keep them out) told from the perspective of a young black man and a young Irish man whose paths cross in Boston. Very violent and not for the tender of heart. Bad things happen to good people over and over. In an interesting aside, Babe Ruth pops up over and over.

it was hard to get into, and while the babe ruth line was tied back in at the end, i almost gave up on the story because of the first 50 pages or so. but it turned out to be a very interesting examination of the nascent labor movement in boston and i ended up enjoying it.

It was kind of boring. Not what I expected from this author after reading a lot of his other books, but ok. Kind of sad.
