I loved this book! Great author, excellent book! Boris Akunin can write - thank goodness! Erast Fandorin is a cross between an socialised Mr Bean and Sherlock Homes. 1 2 3 - and he's got it! I have read this book both in Russian and English, and I can say that the English translation is very elegant and preserves the 19th century-style language that Akunin introduces in this book. Very tastefully written, I think I love it even more for the atmosphere, the period details, and the development of the main character than the crime story itself. Highly recommended.

The hero is Erast Fandorin, and he is endearingly clumsy, yet deceptively clever...a good, twisting tale, set across Russia and France...sadly, this is another detective novel series that I'm going to end up addicted to....
