Read all Boris' books... They are sooooo worth it - just remember that it's worth trying to get your tongue around Russian names - too many consanants for an English speaker but so much of the story hangs on knowing the characters from one another. So, if you ever read an Asterix comic without actually trying to pronounce the Chief's crazy name (in English, Vitalstatistix) or the druid's(in English, Getafix, en Francais, Panoramix), you will do yourself a favour by pronouncing Boris' characters' names...   hide

I have read this book both in Russian and English, and I can say that the English translation is very elegant and preserves the 19th century-style language that Akunin introduces in this book. Very tastefully written, I think I love it even more for the atmosphere, the period details, and the development of the main character than the crime story itself. Highly recommended.
