i'm not a big king fan largely because of the polished formulatic nature of this writing.  this early book stands apart.  my favorite king novel by far.  haunted hotel mixed with a man haunted by alchoholism and a raging temper.  slowly imprisoned by ever growing impenetrable drifts of snow surrounding the hotel, the isolation takes its toll on the man and his family.

Classic Stephen King read about a child with psychic powers and a "possessed" hotel that wants those powers for itself. Differences to the Kubrick film, now to watch the King mini-series. 

Brilliant read. It just took me so long as I am no longer reading 4 hours a day on a train!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME BOOK! I wish I had read it BEFORE seeing any of the movies. I have seen both the original and the re-make so when reading the books, I would vision what was in the movies instead of making up my own people and hotel in my head, which is ALWAYS better. *sigh* Anyhow this book gave me a new found respect for the "Made for TV" version that Steven King did.  AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME BOOK! I wish I had read it BEFORE seeing any of the movies. I have seen both the original and the re-make so when reading the books, I would vision what was in the movies instead of making up my own people and hotel in my head, which is ALWAYS better. *sigh* Anyhow this book gave me a new found respect for the "Made for TV" version that Steven King did. It was closer to the book than the original movie was. Having said that, the original was SCARIER and CREEPIER. The remake however was an over all better movie. The book follows the second movie pretty darn close. There is however a lot of things in the book that Steven couldn't have put in something "made for TV" and that kinda sucks because there was some really creepy parts in there that couldn't have aired. I wish it didn't take me so long to actually read this book.   hide

Es un libro magnífico, el autor muerde los límites de la cordura de un hombre promedio para adentrarnos en un libro lleno de suspenso y comprensión hacia la locura. Con un hijo atrapado entre la ingenuidad de su madre sobreprotectora, los delirios de su padre (alimentados desde la misma alma del hotel) y un poder que no ha logrado controlar y termina por convertirse en su mentor...

I won't go into a novel length review on this most interesting book by Stephen King, only to say that this is one of his finer works, in my opinion.  The scariest books for me to read aren't ones of serial killers and gore.  No, the pyschological thrillers are amongst the most feared in my collection, and this is a story of the human mind...it's frightfully scary in many parts, and a...more
 I won't go into a novel length review on this most interesting book by Stephen King, only to say that this is one of his finer works, in my opinion.  The scariest books for me to read aren't ones of serial killers and gore.  No, the pyschological thrillers are amongst the most feared in my collection, and this is a story of the human mind...it's frightfully scary in many parts, and a mature reader will appreciate this book for what it is.  

Not realistic, by any means...but the downfall of the human mind is quite convincing here.   hide

This King novel is clearly one of my favorites, and perhaps the most disturbing horror novels I've ever read. 
It actually proves to be claustrophobic, in that the author puts the reader right there in the hotel with his characters, and leads us into places and areas we feel reluctant to go, but are carried there, anyway. 
I read the book four times, and it never failed to interest and...more
 This King novel is clearly one of my favorites, and perhaps the most disturbing horror novels I've ever read.

"All work and no play..." A writer with low self esteem takes his family to a deserted mountain luxury hotel to be the caretaker over the winter. Not only is the hotel haunted, but Jack's son, Danny, has the gift of "The Shine" with which he can "see" things other people can not. Danny, together with his strong-willed mother, Wendy, battles this evil against the Hotel...and possible Jack.

After setting the scene, The Shining grips you and doesn't let you go until the end.  If you've only seen the movie, you haven't got the full story by a long shot!  A must read for King fans.
