Guess you have to like Shakespeare. Not one of his best in my opinion but we forgive him cos he's Shakespeare!

Julius Caesar, a historical tragedy by William Shakespeare chronicles the conspiracy against Caesar, his assassination and its aftermath. Brutus, Caesar's dear friend, allows himself to be swayed by Cassius, his ego and his love for Rome and leads the conspirators against "the noblest man who lived in the tide of times". However, Antony, a true friend of Caesar and Octavius, Caesar's nephew suceed in overthrowing the conspirators. Although Caesar appears in only three scenes, his spirit bestrides the play like a collosus. The play contains several brilliant passages - Antony's speech and soliloquey amongst other- and is one of Shakespeare's greatest works. A must read.   hide

If you are looking for a book that contains conspiracy, deception, betrayal and murder then you should read “Julius Caesar” by William Shakespeare. It is about the assassination of a powerful dictator, Julius Caesar, by his friend Marcus Brutus (among other followers) who believed that Caesar’s accumulating power and ambition will lead to Rome’s downfall. It is an interesting play because it touches upon human morality as one can see in Brutus character. In the play Brutus can be described as an honorable and noble man who was Caesar’s closest friend. Because he was lead to believe that Caesar will destroy Rome, he commits a dishonorable act by killing his best friend. However, can his action be justified? That is where morality comes into play. In order to save his people and his country he had to kill a man who would have become a potential tyrant. Can this still be considered honorable? I honestly really love this play because it touches upon ones sense of right and wrong. Although this play was written long ago, the major theme and the inner struggles of the characters can still be applied today. What can I say, Shakespeare was a genius =).   hide

Not one of my favorite Shakespeare plays but still chock-full of great quotes, Julius Caesar focuses around the planning and then aftermath of Caesar's assassination. There are such a wide range of characters that it is hard to truly get to know all of them, and Brutus loses a lot of his sympathy we held for him towards the end of the play. The ending was dragged on a bit too long, also. On the positive side? A great, troubled protagonist in Brutus. Here's a man who would do anything for the people, and when he does what he thinks is best, the people rise to kill him. An underappreciated tragic hero, I'd say! Plus Shakespeare puts in his thoughts on politics and predestination, resulting in some great lines.   hide

Shakespeare boasts of his writing skills here as the known playwright sublimes each of the characters minutely so that we can ourselves locate people like the main characters round us. Excellent conveyance of human emotions and Portia and Calphurnia (although portrayed to be quite simple) but still effectively add to the atmosphere of the play-the hideous conspiracy the revengeful war and such a political saga that whoever reads and understands it fully, will never forget it.   hide

Many will wonder why I rated this so low, as my love for Shakespeare knows no bonds and Hamlet was fantastic by any means. I could not bring myself to enjoy this work of art, however the skill is most certainly there. From the beginning, I knew I would not enjoy it as a whole, for the repetition of events pained me. Out of the whole story, I only enjoyed the scene where Brutus and Marcus gave their speeches. That was a work of sheer brilliance. How both played the crowed like a violin, and Antony leaving the audience in a state of rage was beautiful. My trouble with the book was this: there were no protagonists that I could sympathize with. I wanted them all to die. Fortunately, we all know that they do; that's what's good about Shakespeare. So, I enjoyed it, but not enough to raise the stars any higher.   hide

Actually memorized, "Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ear! I come not to bury Caesar but to praise him!" Learned that in 6th grade! Saw Denzel Washington in Julius Caesar in NYC! I had those seats in the back. It was a cheap ticket even if I had to stand up during the entire show!
