Not quite Madame Bovary. But compared with the works of his fellow writers it is still incomparable.

I picked up an old edition of this novel years ago, so I'm not sure if the book listed is the exact translation. If it is not, my apologies, as the translation I have may greatly differ from others. I picked up an old edition of this novel years ago, so I'm not sure if the book listed is the exact translation. If it is not, my apologies, as the translation I have may greatly differ from others. My memory is also a little rusty, so please forgive the review. What I enjoy the most about this novel is that not one political movement receives better treatment than another. All groups and characters are subject to Flaubert's criticism, including the protagonist. There's an overarching frustration which somehow never amounts to despair, and the feeling that all things continue to plod along, despite best intentions to alter the course of present society.   hide
