What I enjoy the most about this novel is that not one political movement receives better treatment than another. All groups and characters are subject to Flaubert's criticism, including the protagonist. There's an overarching frustration which somehow never amounts to despair, and the feeling that all things continue to plod along, despite best intentions to alter the course of present society.
