when i first started reading it i thought this was the stupidest book ever...but then as i continued to read it i somehow got sucked into the lives of titus and violet. it was not as a perdictable book like i expected. and there were times when i really hated titus. but in the end i could not blame him for what he did b/c of the regret and pain he felt for it. how much he wanted things to have...more
 when i first started reading it i thought this was the stupidest book ever...but then as i continued to read it i somehow got sucked into the lives of titus and violet. it was not as a perdictable book like i expected. and there were times when i really hated titus. but in the end i could not blame him for what he did b/c of the regret and pain he felt for it. how much he wanted things to have been different. the end was simple, tragic, beautiful and unforgettable. i'm glad i decided to read this book(and i hope i didnt give too much away)...   hide

This is sort of a modernistic Farenheit 451 that carries our current social networking tendencies to the absurd extreme, resulting in the c cultivation of a homogenous cesspool of superficial morons and reactionists, completely oblivious to anything that is not marketed to them via the "feed", a chip implanted in the brain.  The book also stabs at the cold ideals of late capitalism and...more
 This is sort of a modernistic Farenheit 451 that carries our current social networking tendencies to the absurd extreme, resulting in the c cultivation of a homogenous cesspool of superficial morons and reactionists, completely oblivious to anything that is not marketed to them via the "feed", a chip implanted in the brain.  The book also stabs at the cold ideals of late capitalism and the utter lack of morals in the marketing business, and rightfully so.  I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of depth in the story line, but the idea was interesting enough to keep me entertained.  Ray Bradbury managed to predict a generation of ogres captivated by flat screen TV's in his apocalyptic novel; we can only hope that Anderson is not so accurate.   hide

This novel is most definitely appropriate for older teens and adults, but perhaps other younger teens could read if for leisure. I think it's a great book to get readers to think about the impact technology could have on us.

This dystopia future is basically a distorted futuristic version of modern day society. Where instead of the Internet being in front of you it is a part of your mind making society less intellectual.  This dystopia future is basically a distorted futuristic version of modern day society. Where instead of the Internet being in front of you it is a part of your mind making society less intellectual.  Advertising bombards you thousands of times a day but in this world depicted by Anderson they are part of you. The role of school was interesting instead of the government feeding us what is so-called history they want you to know, the corporations have taken over educational system to create a consumer based world. It is a bit hard to understand the simplified terminology but in this also adds to the impact upon the reader in displaying a society of simplified to consumerism.   hide
