The Latro series in general is one of those amazing pieces of literature that is stunning in its complexity and beauty. The amnesiac hero's first-person narrative is jarring, confusing, and brilliant, and Wolfe pulls off the narrative in all 3 books flawlessly.

Gene Wolfe is simply genius...he is such a genius that I sometimes simply don't get it. Must be reread again and again, although his writing is so clear and to the point that it is a joy to read. A study guide would be useful :)

Masterfully muted inclusion of gods and magic into a realistic novel of the life of a wounded soldier. Just as the gods were probably taken for granted by the average Greek citizen, the reader soon learns to accept the gods in this novel as subtle parts of the world instead of other-worldly juggernauts.

Bow to Gene Wolfe who knows how to make you think and get just as confused as his character. An amazing piece of literature to say the least. The three star rating however is due to the fact that I kinda got tired of getting completely confused and lost...but I can't see another way to right the book.

When Latro suffers a head injury, he loses the ability to remember anything for longer than 12 hours, but gains the ability to see and expose the gods. The "Soldier" series may stand closer to "New Sun" than any other work in Wolfe's impressive output. "Soldier" is as upfront as the rest of Wolfe's work, meaning that readers will do well to familiarize themselves with the Persian/ Greek...more
