This is my favourite book. The writting and imagery are beautiful. So poetic, so emotive. I find passages stay with me after I read them.

Love Orson Scott Card. Think it was the genre that did not appeal to me.

actually I read an Italian translation from Urania Fantasy (no ISBN)... the sci-fi translations weren't so good, so I'm afraid the one I read doesn't honor "Uncle Orson"... I'll have to read it again in original version!

Card before he fell into any of his ruts. Neither overtly Mormon nor part of a multi-book epic, this story isn't quite as coherent as we expect from Card, but it sure has its moments. I'd ilke to see him revise and expand it like he did with 'A Planet Called Treason' or the Worthing stories; I suspect he could turn it into a gem. But it's certainly worth reading for the Card fan.

This is storytelling! It was the first Card book I've read. I wasn't sure what I would think of this, but when I found myself weeping at the end and thinking about the book days later, knew I had found a new favorite author.

My favorite thing about this book was the sayings near the end of each chapter, generally sounding so wise I considered engraving them into wood or tattooing them on my skin. On a deeper level, the book explored some themes of...more

This is a rather unusually written story--told as an epistle to Palicroval, with the epistle-writer's commentary and advice along with the narrative. It took me a while to get used to the style, but once I did, it added to the feel of the story. It's distant--the omniscient POV doesn't allow the reader deeply into any of the characters' thoughts or...more

Darker than most of Card's other works, and written more like a translated myth and a contemporary novel, but interesting.
