Great book depicting real life in urban poverty and daily struggles folks encounter including addiction, homelessness, and crime. Very nice job bringing reader in to lives and experiences that most of us don't want to and often can't imagine or understand. Would recommend for everyone to read (especially before rendering judgment on addicts, homeless folks, gang members, uneducated folks, the...more

Heartbreaking and real; a genuine masterpiece of American journalism. Gary McCullough, DeAndre McCullough, Fran Boyd, Fat Curt, Eggy Daddy, George "Blue" Epps, Ella Thompson--all of the Fayette Street players--illustrate the human side of the urban rot that plagues our inner cities. Amazing, heart-rending, and essential reading for anyone who hopes to understand the rise and and fall of the...more

Book was made into HBO mini-series. Interesting look into the open air drug market which is prevelant in West Baltimore. 1 cool thing is book has a map of the of the area which most people who live there have never left in their lives.

Pray for and with him, yes. But I believe that we...more

This is an intimate and passionate book, a chronicling of urban decay that becomes all the more heartbreaking in its realization of the potential of both the doomed teenagers and the wasted lives of the parents, all of whom have been claimed by either addiction or the drug trade itself.

You'd think that if you watched The Wire this won't have anything you don't already know, and you'd be about 70% right. Long and sometimes pedantic, but the characters are all real and the book lets the authors get deeper into their heads; worth a read if you're a Wire junkie.

Gritty, heartbreaking, and honest. Lacks some of the warmth of Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets without the camaraderie of the cops, but the exploration of everyone's unique pursuit at the American Dream is nowhere near as boring as it sounds. People are open and at their best and worst in this book, Simon and Ed Burns get people to talk like no one else can. The HBO miniseries The...more
