Over all a so-so book. The premise of this book is that the heart is more than a simple mechanical pump and that it is a thinking neuro-endocrine organ with greater implications to the evolution of human consciousness than most of society and, definitely medicine, are aware of. One of the most interesting parts of the book is where the author tells about his work in interviewing heart transplant recipients and that, based on first-hand accounts, he believes that personality traits, food likes/dislikes, taste in music, etc. can be transferred from the donor to the recipient via the heart organ. I'm not quite sure if I follow all of his arguments, and I think that a lot of his suppositions are very loosely strung together. I do think that there is more to the heart and to heart disease than we all currently acknowledge, but I'm not sure that this book has the answer. Mostly, my poor rating goes to the book more for literary reasons than for substance. In this case, the author exhibits less than ideal writing skills, but mostly a poor ability to string together the concepts as the book moves forward. Overall, I think that any medically-oriented person should definitely read this book, if for no other reason than it gets you thinking outside the box.   hide
