The author wrote a solid book but the personalities of Gerald and Sara Murphy -- although hinted at -- did not, for me, fully emerge. The book was, I think, unfinished. But just in the sense that so much was obscured (both in terms of pure psychology, in that the persons involved were involved in denial, but also in the sense of documents being destroyed or supressed). The famous, it seems, have no more desire to be fully revealed than the rest of us. Perhaps less. Maybe in another generation or two more documents will become available and we might learn more about this very interesting couple and those that they loved, supported, and were, ultimately, largely abandoned by.   hide

A really terrific biography of two people I didn't know much about, but who supported and helped writers like Fitzgerald and Hemingway -- who mostly turned around and stabbed them in the back. Yes, Ernest, I'm looking at you, you bastard.
