All royalties and profits go to CARE International.Bryson visits Kenya at the invitation of CARE International, the charity dedicated to eradicating poverty. Kenya is a land of contrasts, with famous game reserves and a vibrant culture. It also provides plenty to worry a traveller like Bill Bryson, fixated as he is on the dangers posed by snakes, insects and large predators. It is also a country with many serious problems: refugees, AIDS, drought, and grinding poverty. The resultant diary, though short in length, contains the trademark Bryson stamp of wry observation and curious insight.   less

I've never met a Bill Bryson book I didn't love.  I love his writing style and I loved seeing Kenya through his eyes.  I wish it would've been longer.

Per the usual wit of Bill Bryson, this book is entertaining.  But it is so short, I do not recommend buying it unless your goal is simply a charitible donation (all royalties from the book go to charity).  Check it out from the library instead.

This book is EXTREMELY short and I think may be a little disappointing to Bryson fans who are looking to get their fix.

An extremely short look into 'Africa', or should I say Kenya. I was disappointed with the approx. 50 page read as I personally learnt nothing from it. Though I don't want to be wholly critical as I think the idea and intentions were good - and if it did in fact help the charity raise funds then fair play to him, and I hope other novelists follow suit.
