Great insight and background info on Tweedy and Uncle Tupelo. A must for a Wilco or Tupelo fan.

Kot's reportage is fascinating. He is clearly enthralled by the band and its history. The Uncle Tupelo memories are pieced together perfectly, but it is his coverage of the events surrounding the release of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" that I found most exciting.

great book---"gospel me to the garden..." R Lowell excellent backstory on one of my favorite bands!"it's hot in the poor places tonight, i'm not going outside..." adept tracing of jeff tweedy and the crew's history back to the pre Uncle Tupelo days. great companion to "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" documentary by Sam Jones.

I wanted to love this book, since it's the only book about my favorite band. I kept reminding myself that Kot is a journalist, and the book is certainly well reported, but I felt like it was lacking a sense of story or understanding of narrative arc. Kot set up too many scenes that he ran away from a paragraph later, which made the book feel uneven to me. Equally frustrating was the fact...more

Jeff Tweedy comes off as super passive agressive, but the stuff on Tupelo is worth the price for ageing obsessives like me.

Although this is the only available chronicle of the Jeff Tweedy saga that is Uncle Tupelo and Wilco I felt dissapointed reading it purely for the fact that as much as author Greg Kot gets close to the true essence of the music the way that he portrays it is often lacking inspiration. It is quite a task to analyze Jeff's music but I thought that this book would offer me more of an insight rather...more

Obviously Greg Kot is a fan. It's hardly Albert Goldman's controversial John Lennon biography. However, Kot's a good writer writing about a great band. All is safe then.

The author brings a great understanding of a band that is often greatly misunderstood.

This was great, a book about a band that makes music i love and musicians who approach their music like painters approach a painting! Great read for painters as sometimes someone comes along and describes the creative process well! Great Band great insight into the concept of musicans as artists who appoach their work like painters do!

good Wilco background book by the Chicago Trib's (and Sound Opinions) writer Greg Kot. One feels that Kot is only scratching the surface on the complexities of Jeff Tweedy. Recommend watching the "Iam Trying to Break Your Heart" (Wilco doc movie) as a follow up to reading this. Recommended.
