I'm not done yet but so juicy. Kind of like the soap opera of famous chefs in america.

Food fashion through the past century. How French cuisine came to dominate our gastronomic consciousness and how our heroes (Julia Child, critics, food manufacturers) changed the way we cook and eat

Too much information! I got bogged down in the sticky details. It was interesting, sort of, but would have been more so were I a real foodie rather than a casual user.

having been in the food business, this was a natural for me to read. The age of the celebrity chef and 24 cooking/food channel weren't even a thought 20-25 years ago.Interesting to see how things progressed

This book seriously took me 5 months to get through - I couldn't just read it start to finish, like I usually do. I guess the topic wasn't as compelling as I thought it would be. Too many footnotes for my taste, although I must say, the author did his research.

Quite a good book. I already liked to cook and this only reinforced my enjoyment! I've gone crazy with goat cheese since finishing this... This is a very nice book especially if you are interested in food. As a bay-areaer, I loved reading about how restaurants I have been to contributed to the food revolution in America. It is about 75 pages too long, however, for the topic.

I was familiar with a lot of the material here - the career of Julia Child, the California food movement and others. Overall I found it an interesting compendium of how some American have moved beyond jello molds to fresh in season...more

Very, very interesting...but also very dull. Not nearly as fun as other foodie nonfiction like The Devil's Garden.

Interesting history of gastronomy in the US. It explores the influences of individuals on the tastes of the nation. Too often it devolves into a gossipy tone discussing the personal relationships of individuals in the US food world.
