A complete history of the science, the discoveries and the affectations that have become modern living in the industrialized world. Very Anglo-American in focus, but none the less engaging.

Bill Bryson is always entertaining and informative. This book is built around the history of (mostly) domestic architecture. Sounds boring? It's not.

Delightful fluttering about in a Victorian house used as a pretext for telling stories about the origins of our way of living ... and a lot more

This book was a suggestion to me from Amazon. I still can't believe I read it, but I'm so glad that I did. If you enjoy learning about obscure things like why homes have hallways, or why we have basements, or how certain furniture came to be, then you'll enjoy this book. It got a little slow in the late middle, but overall it was very enjoyable.

Only thing I hated about this book was having to read the last page and wishing there was even more!! Totally fascinating!

Almost everything in the lives of westerners has changed in the last 150 years, in ways both familiar and entirely surprising. Using the rooms of a house built in the 1850s as a jumping off point, Bill Bryson takes the reader on an incredible tour of how the world used to be and how it got to where it's at. Cannot recommend enough

Just started this book and loving it so far. I have to jump on Google every few pages to look up more info on what he's talking about - but in a good way. It's so interesting!

Not quite as good as 'a short history of nearly everything' but still a good read
