Loved this book! Hilarious, insightful, interesting. Troost travels, alone, all over China and comes across many of the mysteries we did while traveling there. Although he was much more adventurous. A must-read.

I read this just before my own trip to China. It left me a little worried as to what I was letting myself in for. However, this worry was unfounded. In hindsight, I found the author rather condescending of the Chinese people. Yes, China is a difficult country to explore. The language, culture and infrastructure are very different to the west. Consequentially, it takes time to come to terms with, but the Chinese are very amicable, helpful and extremely patient. Aside from that, this book is amusing and much of the information is good. It's definately worth reading if you're heading out that way. Just don't let it put you off.   hide

The third in a travelog trilogy of sorts, it is nowhere near as funny as the first one "The Sex Lives of Canibals". It is still a very good read, makes you think--with quite a few laugh out loud segments. The squid part has made me rethink sushi.
