more ***SPOILER ALERT***This novel is set on a Caribbean island populated by black, Indians and white missionaries. At the centre of the novel is a woman, Mala, who is now in an asylum after having murdered her father. She is cared for by a male nurse Tyler who acts as narrator of the story. The novel begins with the childhood of Mala's father who is orphaned and raided by a missionary couple who treat in many ways like a son. He is in love with his adoptive sister but his parents disallow this as inappropriate. The sister visits Canada and falls in love and becomes engaged to the missionary's nephew there but nothing comes of this and she returns. In the meantime her brother in a fit of anger has married a woman he does not love. They have a troubled marriage and she leaves him with their two daughters. The elder daughter leave home at the earliest opportunity, also going to Canada. Mala, the younger sister maintains the home and is eventually courted by a young university educated man. She keeps this secret from her father but he is discovers it and rapes her. She in turn murders him and tries to hide the body. She is arrested and found to be mentally unstable. The young man marries another woman but never forgets Mala.
