I recommend this one to my fellow nursing students/nurses. It spans a few years and acknowledges how much our profession has changed, or rather, how much more we have to work towards FURTHER changing the legal and ethical frameworks of our jobs. It also made me thankful that I'm in California and not in Canada with lower nurse to patient ratios!

fabulous book if you are a nurse....the author battles many of the same demons we do in nursing.....and how it difficult and wonderful it can be at the same time. Nursing is not a job or even a career, it's a way of life, and the author captures this beautifuly......also great for anyone thinking of becoming a nurse or working in health care....

Read while waiting to enter nursing school and now as an experienced nurse understand it is an accurate portrayal of the occupation, however rather dry writing.

As an ICU nurse, Shalof tells some amazing stories about illness, recovery, death, and letting go.The writing style could use some work - there's not a lot of subtlety and reads like a magazine article. Also, there's a lot of dialogue that doesn't ring true, and seems like a clumsy way to inject politics (albeit important ones). But overall, a really touching and authentic read.
