 Nurdin Lalani and his family, Asian immigrants from Africa, have come to the Toronto suburb of Don Mills only to find that the old world and its values pursue them. A genial orderly at a downtown hospital, he has been accused of sexually assaulting a girl. Although he is innocent, traditional propriety prompts him to question the purity of his own thoughts. Ultimately, his friendship with the enlightened Sushila offers him an alluring freedom from a past that haunts him, a marriage that has become routine, and from the trials of coping with teenage children. Introducing us to a cast of vividly drawn characters within this immigrant community, Vassanji is a keen observer of lives caught between one world and another.   less

A wondrous tale of an immigrant community and their trials. He brings to life the best and the worst of what that experience must be like, complete with family strife, cultural clashes, and personal temptations. His descriptions are vibrant and bold, proving why his work is such a respected part of contemporary Canadian Literature.

About a family of Asian immigrants from East Africa living in Rosecliff Park (i.e. Thorncliffe Park) in Toronto during the 1970s. The story and characterization is strong. About the family and their friends' often difficult adjustment to the new land. The story is told with humour and irony. One of the problems the author covers is racism in Toronto. I remember first hearing the term...more
 About a family of Asian immigrants from East Africa living in Rosecliff Park (i.e. Thorncliffe Park) in Toronto during the 1970s. The story and characterization is strong. About the family and their friends' often difficult adjustment to the new land. The story is told with humour and irony. One of the problems the author covers is racism in Toronto. I remember first hearing the term "Paki" in the mid-'70s. One character in this novel points out that she has never been to Pakistan, which is the case for all the characters in this book. There is quite a vibrant community (including businesses operated by people selling samosas, etc., and a sort of cafe in the lobby) in  this fictitious apartment building. (BTW, the author did live in Thorncliffe Park.) This book is a quick read. My only complaint - it was too short.   hide
