***SPOILER ALERT***This short novel depicts the Montreal Jewish ghetto which he further expands upon in Duddy Kravitz.  At the centre of this novel again is the son of a never do well father who is largely moving away from his community.  He has a non-Jewish girlfriend and relates most frequently with non-Jewish people.  He is a great disappointment to his grandfather who is the son of a scribe. ...more
 ***SPOILER ALERT***This short novel depicts the Montreal Jewish ghetto which he further expands upon in Duddy Kravitz.  At the centre of this novel again is the son of a never do well father who is largely moving away from his community.  He has a non-Jewish girlfriend and relates most frequently with non-Jewish people.  He is a great disappointment to his grandfather who is the son of a scribe.  The grandfather is working on some scrolls which a very valuable to him.  His son thinks they are valuable and is killed trying to save them from a fire.  The grandfather promotes this as an act of bravery even if it is uncharacteristic.  The novel ends with the young man leaving his lover and family for Europe.   hide

This book is set in the Jewish "Ghetto" of Montreal and follows an idealistic Noah Adler away from his Jewish roots into the realm of the Goyim.  Noah fails to live up to all the expectations his family has of him and is considered an outsider and unwelcome.  Noah rebels against his family and tries to leave them behind.  This book is set in the Jewish "Ghetto" of Montreal and follows an idealistic Noah Adler away from his Jewish roots into the realm of the Goyim.  Noah fails to live up to all the expectations his family has of him and is considered an outsider and unwelcome.  Noah rebels against his family and tries to leave them behind.  This story contains many characters, which can make the plot difficult to follow at times.  It was a pretty good novel but I prefer the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz over it.   hide
