Love it or hate it. I really enjoyed it, Duddy is a character that by rights you should hate but for some reason you always give him another chance.

Canada's version of Stephen Dedalus tries hard to succeed, misses the point and fails. The novel reveals the pitfalls of negative ambition and blames no one but the protagonist for his misguided faith in the material. It's told with a sick kind of fascination you can only find in Can Lit.
