 In The Sacred Romance authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge inspire readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life", this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover", attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blinds the believer and prevents him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life soon becomes empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls. A follow-up book, The Journey of Desire, was written by John Eldredge after Brent Curtis' tragic death. --Jill Heatherly   less

One of the most illuminating books on the romancing of God towards us I have read.  It gave me freedom to love Jesus in ways I thought wasn't "allowed" and freedom to let Him love me and pursue me in the ways I desired and hoped for.  A passionate, beautiful read.

If you like this my guess is you may like Wild at Heart even more.  I don't know, a woman may well prefer this book to Wild at Heart while men may be inclined to prefer Wild at Heart.  Both books have a comparable scope in dealing with the quest for an intimate relationship with God.

We grow closer to God through our wounds.  I read this while grappling with why God would allow me to be infertile.  It's not about that, but it's about seeking Jesus no matter what.  Jesus is enough!  Marriage and children are a bonus - sweet Jesus is enough.  Seek Him.

This book, like other John Eldridge books, seems to be off by just hair and I can't put my finger on it. It seems to be full of good points and doesn't seem to counter scripture but a couple of things bother me just a bit.
One is that the over all focus of the book seems to be along the lines of "life has hurt me and God's going to make me feel better"...slightly self-focused. The other thing I...more
 This book, like other John Eldridge books, seems to be off by just hair and I can't put my finger on it. It seems to be full of good points and doesn't seem to counter scripture but a couple of things bother me just a bit.
One is that the over all focus of the book seems to be along the lines of "life has hurt me and God's going to make me feel better"...slightly self-focused. The other thing I have a hard time with is ambiguous metaphors (The Message of the Arrows). CS Lewis was a master of the metaphor and allegory. Brent & John's seem a little too abstract....   hide

I got about half way through the book and loved it... then it got a little religious and I put it down.  Perhaps some day I will finish reading it.

This is one of those books, that when I picked it up, I could not put it down until I finished it and one that I will read several times.

One I have found in reading this book, is that it confirm so many things to my heart, to my spirit, of things that the Lord has been speaking to me over the last four years as I went through the events of my life.

It is a book that I recommend every man...more

One I have found in reading this book, is that it confirm so many things to my heart, to my spirit, of things that the Lord has been speaking to me over the last four years as I went through the events of my life.

It is a book that I recommend every man and women should read, as well as Wild at Heart, which I am reading right now as part of our Joshua's men group at my church.  

Also getting ready to read Captivating by his wife and I look forward to  reading it.

To remember that the Father knows the whole story and is pursing us, is totally awesome!

I expect we have all experienced restlessness and pain that we couldn't satisfactorily explain. Brent Curtis and John Eldredge dig into these universal feelings in "The Sacred Romance" and come up with the big story of which we are all a part, the story of God's unending love for us.

 I expect we have all experienced restlessness and pain that we couldn't satisfactorily explain. Brent Curtis and John Eldredge dig into these universal feelings in "The Sacred Romance" and come up with the big story of which we are all a part, the story of God's unending love for us.

Memory and desire, the forces within us that should draw us closer to God, are manipulated and battered by the darkness and dangers of life on earth, these two Christian counselors from Colorado tell us. But we can wrest back our focus onto our chief Lover, Almighty God.

I appreciate that this book is not about how to get your life under control, but how to release yourself from the prison of negativity, guilt, or a "goody-two-shoes" mentality into the wildness of a romance with God.   hide
