I really thought this book was going to dissapoint. There was just so much hype around the series that I avoided it. I really thought this book was going to dissapoint. There was just so much hype around the series that I avoided it. I also wasn't sure if I was going to really buy into the main character, who while a dastardly youth is supposed to be the hero of the story. In the end, I do like Artemis or at the idea for Artemis. It is refreshing to read about a youth who is not of lawful good build. The beginning is rough, I won't lie. The prose felt so chunky, and Artemis and Butler were very flat individuals. It gets much better halfway through, and by the end it is hard to put down.   hide

Incredibly clever story involving fairies, magic and other magical creatures. Artmeis Fowl makes an amazing super villain, especially considering he's only 12 years old. His reasoning at the end was not only logical, but explained something generations of children have pondered. The twist came as a surprise to me, and put a huge smile on my face.

This was a very simple, but also very fulfilling read. As a lover of fantasy, I enjoyed this well-balanced story of humans mingling in the world of faeries and other creatures of old folk tales. This was a very simple, but also very fulfilling read. As a lover of fantasy, I enjoyed this well-balanced story of humans mingling in the world of faeries and other creatures of old folk tales. I like how this book integrates technology into folklore. These faeries are beings of the modern age, rather than beings born with natural talents of magic and flight. This brings the magic in more subtly and closer to a realistic version of the old tales. I also enjoyed how simplistic the book was, without being too distant and lacking in details. You get a clear picture of what's happening and the whole story is very interesting without being drawn-out and long-winded. The reading level is a bit lower all-in-all, but the story is adorable and worrisome all the same time. Sometimes you're just not sure who to root for. I also have to say I'm a bit tickled at how stories like these tend to bring out my inner child just the littlest bit. I'll be reading the rest of the series, I'm intrigued!   hide

Colfer's most famous but least amazing book (series)...oh well! It's still okay. No great morals or messages, just an action fantasy story.

Artemis Fowl (and in fact, the whole Artemis Fowl series) is quite possibly my favourite book of all time. The characters are awesome, from Artemis, the 12-year-old boy genius, to Butler, his 7ft tall Eurasian manservant, Holly, a feisty female member of the LEP, and Mulch, a kleptomaniac dwarf. The characters in the book really grow on you and you learn to love them, even Artemis. The story follows Artemis as he hatches a plan to kidnap a fairy and hold them to ransom for a substatial amount of gold. However, Arty gets more than he bargained for when he realises that the fairy people are much more advanced than he first thought. It's a really fun book and I loved it as soon as I read it. In fact, I've read it so many times I can recite parts of it off by heart... Definately worth a read, especially if you're looking for something easygoing and fun. 10/10.   hide

Eoin Colfer makes the young evil genius out to be the most brilliant and evil little tyke imaginable, and I normally get quite irate at authors who rely on absolutes (Dan Brown, I'm talking about you). Eoin Colfer makes the young evil genius out to be the most brilliant and evil little tyke imaginable, and I normally get quite irate at authors who rely on absolutes (Dan Brown, I'm talking about you). This is the exception. The modern fantasy world was obviously well thought out and gripping. Artemis, despite his flaws, is still sympathetic. The only real complaint I have is that, in retrospect, I can't really distinguish between the books.   hide

This, to me, does not signify a man who writes for the joy of writing. However, that does not detract from the fact that the first three "Artemis Fowl" books were clever and original. Unfortunately, like most series that started off well, this one has been taken to the point of boredom. I would recommend this one for sure, though.   hide

Hilarious, tongue in cheek young adult fantasy- one of my favorite things.
