Ignatius Reilly is simply the most original, pitiful, unabashedly conceited character I have come across in literature. Inspite of these traits, however, Ignatius is also typcially human, oddly admirable in his confidence and intelligence, and completely overcome by (and quite possibly aware of) his numerous shortcomings. His political and theological beliefs, which guide nearly all aspects of...more

I read the first 2 chapters and gave up. I thought the main character was a degenerate, treating his mother and everyone around him like shit and generally contributing nothing to society. I am stubborn and rarely give up on books so I could not help myself and simply walk away. Knowing that I was not going to waste valuble time finishing the book when so many other books are waiting for me... I...more

I am reading the book again for about the 20th time right now. A true classic. Here is a photo of my son Max standing next to the statue of Ignatius Reilly in front of what was once the old D. H. Holmes Department Store in New Orleans: http://gallery.mac.com/misterron#100183/100_0894&bgcolor=black

This was the most absurd book with the most absurd characters I have ever read/listened to. But it was very enjoyable.

I loved this book! John Kennedy Toole crafts an amusing assemblage of caricatures. Here you will find the poor, the wealthy, elite and uneducated shuffled and rearranged by the clever hand of satire. Our protagonist, Ignatius J. Reilly, is hopelessly pathetic: lovable or maddening, it rests in your discretion. Think: modern Milton, gone awry. He is comedy and tragedy, and believe you me, he can...more

One of my favorite books ever, hilarious like no other! The main character has brilliant quips like, "Your total ignorance of that which you profess to teach merits the death penalty. I doubt whether you would know that St. Cassian of Imola was stabbed to death by his students with their styli. His death, a martyr's one, made him a patron saint of teachers. Pray to him, you deluded fool, you...more

I know that this is an important piece of American literature and I feel badly that John Kennedy Toole committed suicide desparing that it would never be published. That said, I must admit that I had to force myself to finish it, and would have abandoned it but for its credentials. The character development was wonderful, the depiction of New Orleans was wonderful, but I was so 'disturbed' by...more

What a waste of time. It gives Pulitzer a bad name. This wishes it were half the book Catcher in the Rye was, and I don't have the highest esteem for that. It's insulting to mention the two together. Kennedy is not unskilled verbally, and has imagined an intriguing character. But if it was a comedy, it never made me so much as smile. It was no tragedy and almost too silly and light to qualify as...more
