Israel journalist and historian details the history of Palestine under the British mandate, circa WWI (Balfour Declaration) until just before the creation of Israel. Weaves a story though various individuals, but primarily focused on British leaders, diaries of new Jewish immigrants, etc.... A well-written, anecdotal history of Palestine under British leadership. I was initially worried it might be a biased account since it was written by an Israeli writer, but I was pleasantly surprised at his even-handed description of events. The parallels between the events that took place back then under British control to the events that are currently taking place in Iraq under American control...more

I thought this book was an excellent portrait of Palestine in the Mandate era. My only criticism is that I wish there were a bit more information on the Arab community and their social and political organizations.

I recommend this book for the readers who seek to gain knowledge on the British Mandate of palestine between 1917-1948. This book is written as a life story of different arab, jewish and british characters during this period.
