Peter Pan

Since Peter Pan is my favorite fictional character of all time I figured it was time to read the book that started it all, well kind of... it was actually a play first, then Barrie converted it into a novel, but anyway... I do recommend Peter Pan, by the way, especially if you're ever looking for a "filler" book, as it's so short. I loved his way of story telling, perfectly fantastic- I think if I were a child I would have loved it even more! It was really cool, too, to see which movies adapted which parts- no movie I've seen is a true adaptation. I had a few fun surprises upon reading the book, and my edition had an afterword in the back with an interesting mini-history on James Barrie; I'm glad I read it!   hide

The book version is pretty interesting because the Peter we know from the Disney movie is more charming than the Peter in the book. The Peter in the book is a fun character, childlike..but EXTREMELY childlike with childlike selfishness of a sort. The book has great bits of satire against adults that only adults could pick up, great characters, and is just fun to read with all the whimsical pieces...more

The book has great bits of satire against adults that only adults could pick up, great characters, and is just fun to read with all the whimsical pieces to it. The version I have has the stories "Peter and Wendy" (which is what the play/movie is derived from) and also "Peter in Kensington Gardens" which is a kind of odd but also whimsically fun story of Peter Pan. Fairly easy reads..read them both in one day. Definitely reccommend it..it's a little different take than the movie you see as a child, but not necessarily in a negative way.   hide

I loved this story. Ive seen countless adaptation in film, but it actually was the first time that I read the book. I loved it, but not my favorite (probably because I already knew the story... so nothing new..). The concept, the magical world, the nostalgia of being a kid (and wanting to stay like this forever) is really cool and well portrayed. Its a classic afterall.(41)

Not really a children's story since kids would be bored reading really big words. You would have to edit a few words to have the book make sense for today's children. But this classic novel is something that kids should read and be made aware.Who doesn't love Peter pan? His adventures are nothing short of fun!

I do not like the Peter in the book as much as I like the Peter in the 2003 Disney version. I find the movie so much sadder because of Peter's supposed inability to feel, and when he finally does realized that he feels you realize that in a way Peter did grow up, after all it is his "Biggest Pretend." However, since Pan must never grow up he makes a more clearer choice in the film to remain a child rather to enjoy things like love that adults get to experience, a world from which he is forever barred.   hide

This little story has made more money for the children's hospital it is dedicated to than any other similar philanthropy in history. Great classic tale and play. Have seen it on Broadway with Sandy Duncan. On TV with Mary Martin back in the 1960's and I still clap when asked if I believe in fairies. The first time, I remember believing it was truly a matter of life and death for Tinkerbelle....more
