It seems silly to call a book devoted to debunking the benefits of blind optimism, pessimistic...but ...damn. This book is the Debbie Downer of books. I like the way Barbara Ehrenreich writes and find her books to be well researched, but I am afraid that her conclusions are far to one-side and as in all things, moderation is the best route. Temper optimism with facts. Go read, then think,...more

The author is somewhat of a curmudgeon who takes issue with the positive thinking crowd. While she makes some good points, she seems to have a special gripe with Calvinism and is the first person I've heard who's tried to pin part of the blame for the sub-prime mortgage fiasco on television evangelists! Come on, Barbara, even if some smiley preacher tells people they "deserve" a house, they...more

There are times that looking on the bright side is just not appropriate. Anger, apprehension and yes, even pessimism have served our species well over the past several millennium.

Interesting observations of how "positivity" has become a cultural expectation. Warns against ignoring common-sense, practical, and even pessimistic contributions from others as we leave ourselves vulnerable to thinking everything will be ok with just the power of thought, but not taking necessary course of actions

I wish everyone would read this book. Silly, nonsense based "positivism" is killing people and sending our country down the tubes. We need to wake up, face reality which isn't always pretty, and deal maturely with serious problems rather than ignore them with "everything will be fine". True, sometimes we know or sense that we will get through something hard. But too often "everything will be...more

As a psychotherapist and life coach I feel this is a “must-read” for all therapists and coaches who truly want to help people. Ehrenreich’s book is the most lucid account I’ve seen of the “for-profit prophet” con game. The “con” goes back at least to the “New Thought” movement of the 19th century (although Eugene Taylor traces some elements of it to the colonial times in...more

The first half is actually quite insightful. The book later devolves into a rant where Ehrenreich tends to repeat the notion that left-wing activism is the antidote for all this toxic positive thinking.

Barbara Ehrenrich has a point, two good points actually. Her experience with breast cancer exposed her to the world of positive thinking wellness, where patients blame themselves for treatments not working because they had negative thoughts. This could have been a great article in a popular magazine. Her further exploration into the world of positive thinking led her (I think) to the...more

This is a very important book for understanding modern American culture (mainstream, that is)and the current economic downturn. The author begins by describing her experience as a breast cancer patient, particularly how she was told over and over that "a good attitude" was vital to her recovery. Not really, she tells us, showing us that she did her homework with multiple...more
