Oh how I wish this book had been written when I was 11. Fits me perfectly. A tomboy girl who love to explore nature and science. I hope it wins the Newbery on Monday.

Such a great book to read to the little girls in my life. :) Life was very different 100+ years ago for girls and this book brought out such great discussions. :)

love this late 19th century heroine and her struggle to find her spot in her TX life. She loves science and is encouraged by her grandfather to explore and embrace this love. However, as 1899 moves ever closer to 1900 and the turn of a new century, Culpurnia begins to wonder if she should adhere to science or if she should try to live more traditionally.

Great, wholesome read. I loved Calpurnia-so bright and innocent. Will appeal to the tomboys and girly girls alike. Am recommending to my 11yo son as well. I want to hear more about Callie as she grows up!

I adore this book! So glad I found J. Kelly. A new copy is the only thing I've asked for, for Christmas!

Engaging and funny at times, this historical novel featured an interesting integration of science and technology in late 1800, early 1900s rural farm life. Great characterization.

I was sorry when this book ended. I'd certainly like to know more about Calpurnia. It's the story of an unconventional girl growing up in 1899 in Texas, who is more interested in Darwin than cooking. Great story, but way too short.

One of the best books I've read in a long time. If you enjoy historical turn of the century fiction this is fabulous! I think it should be the Newberry WINNER not just an "honor" book. Just a terrific story.

This historical fiction, written for middle grades, is set in central Texas in 1899. The title character is the only daughter of a typical southern family. While Calpurnia is interested in science and nature, and spending afternoon collecting specimens and discussing Darwin's theories with her grandfather, her mother is interested in having her knit, sew and cook. Calpurnia wants to get an...more
